Entertaining in the Kitchen

Entertaining in the Kitchen

The majority of kitchens that Kitcheners ® design are more than just cooking spaces. They are often the living and entertaining hubs of the home where family and friends congregate. The ‘entertaining’ brief given to the designer always requires them to put both their practical and aesthetic hats on so they can help create something that is both stylish and functional. Creating an entertaining kitchen requires many considerations.

Firstly, the design is often modern and minimal, making the transition from kitchen to living space completely seamless. Having design features in both spaces that may mirror each other can definitely help. Lurid colours and details may not be the best path to take as you may not want one space to starkly stand out from the other. Simplicity is also the key when it comes to furnishings and accessories, with blended steam-lined design strongly encouraged.

One will often find few walls in a great entertaining kitchen. An open inviting space allows for significant traffic flow when many guests are over. Open planned kitchens that adjoin the living room are also very popular with young families when parents want to keep an eye on the children.

At Eurocucina 2010 in Milan, Michael Kitchener and the team saw for themselves how the Europeans, accustomed to densely populated living, are continually seeking smarter ways to maximise their area and enhance an entertaining space. Most noticeable was the innovative manner in which kitchen joinery flowed into the living room so that crockery and books can effortlessly sit side by side.

There’s been a huge popularity surge in variable benchtops, a response to consumer’s needs for multiple usages. It’s now common to see a benchtop flow into a study desk or a bookshelf.

It’s quite easy to give your kitchen an entertaining edge. It’s simply all in the detail and having the right designers on board.
